The Grandkids Who Never Replied

Written to Samuel Allred, June 2006, by Grandma Barbara

Dallas, TX

There was a grandmother who loved to write letters

To her grandchildren scattered and many

Her nerves  were quite often in pathetic fetters

As she rarely heard back from them, any!

But write on she did, as it gave her a thrill

She really didnąt need to hear back

From Sam, or from William, from Livy or Emma

Or even irascible Jack.

Then one day in the mailbox, she found a surprise

On the back of some very cool art

From Samuel, the Smartest (or so he was called)

And it gave her a veritable start

Her confidence stronger, she decided to go

And  tuck in yet one more sweet card

To heap thanks on the boy who remembered her so,

And whose writing resembled the Bard.

Not just writing on one side, but art on the other

Brought almost a tear to her eye

In ecstatic delight, she called up his mother

And said, łyour son Samuel is quite the good guy!˛

And now she is writing, yes, writing again

In a cycle of mail conversation

To the Boy Who Wrote Grandma

Yes, that would be you

The most adored grandboy in the nation.

The writing wonąt stop, somewhat ilke this long poem

Whose verses eternally run

Because writing these notes, and  penning these poems

For your Grandma, is really quite FUN!
