Sep 04, 2002:
There are times when we feel that we Texans are living in a truly unique environment, and this weekend was one of those times. Where else could you hear the breathless exclamation, "Our little Corvette was dang near gored by an escaped longhorn on our way home from Grandma's house!"

But so it was for the Parents, who indeed had that experience as they headed along a country highway in north Plano, only to find a few members of a local herd of Texas longhorn cattle escaped from their fenced pasture and contently grazing right next to the highway. The parents, in their little red Corvette, along with an SUV and a police car, pulled aside to form a barrier between the grass strip and the highway in hopes of keeping the cattle from stepping into the road. The country-bred cop demonstrated his skills at "flashlight herding," coaxing the animals back through the broken fence, but only after they came perilously close to a memorable prick into the side of the SUV. At that point we wondered if we were doing the right thing to be babysitting the critters with our hardware, and were relieved to get on down the road ourselves!
