Our Mascot!

"In moving-slow he has no Peer. You ask him something in his ear; He thinks about it for a Year; and, then, before he says a Word, There, upside down (unlike a Bird) He will assume that you have Heard- A most Ex-as-per-at-ing Lug. But should you call his manner Smug, He'll sigh and give his Branch a Hug; Then off again to Sleep he goes, Still swaying gently by his Toes, And you just know he knows he knows."
The Sloth, Theodore Roethke

Ahh, Lucky the Sloth. How did we ever live without her? This sweet little creature was a denizen of the Dallas World Aquarium and dearly loved by all who met her. Her name was especially meaningful as she was the lone survivor or a pair brought up from a zoo in Venezuela. Her partner, a male, died after arrival of a heart problem. Lucky was tended lovingly by her keepers at the DWA and was often a little hard to find if there wasn't a 'sloth sitter' available; in which case she would be kept in some protected spot where she couldn't get into trouble. She loved to climb all over the place and no one wanted to have to scoop her out of the crocodile pond! Hope you enjoy the photos of this endearing little creature! We salute her memory as the longest-living 3-toed sloth in the world. Unfortunately, she died on March 17, 2001. She is probably the only sloth with her own web page, and her memory will live on! We consider ourselves lucky indeed to have known her!

We just loved to take photos of Lucky each time we went to the Aquarium. She was joined by two other sloths, VB and Stoney, who followed her and could be seen at the Dallas World Aquarium. Lucky remains the Benac Family's mascot. If you want to know more about sloth facts, click here.

Sloth Lovers, this is a great day indeed. For those who love sloth photos, the Editor has posted an entire album full of late-breaking shots of our edentate pal! Click on the image below to gain access to the treasure trove of pictures!

Acting positively slothful one fine February afternoon, Lucky hung around with reckless abandon!

Playing Twister in the Trees, our friend demos her limber limbs!

VB, for Venezuelan Born (what kind of a name is that?), poses for the Editor in May 2002.

Lucky as an art form delighted a select few who received her image in this valentine for the year 2000!

Summer Update 2000: We are proud to announce the arrival of a new little cuddley sloth, VB , which stands for Venezuela-Born; which is the temporary name of the adorable new sloth companion to our own rambunctious Lucky, who now finds herself very frequently in a holding area so visitors to the Aquarium are lucky themselves if they get a chance to see her. Little VB was 9 months old in August of 2000, and is shown here doing what most babies do, enjoying a snuggly nap; oblivious to the stares of the thousands of visitors to the beautiful aquarium where she lives.
